Mainline

What was planned as a race around the subway soon took on a life of its own as a massive tremor ripped open sewers, train stations and storm drains. Provided the city can hold itself together long enough, this is a track in which anything could happen.

"Dude, I don't actually want to be roadkill..." - Bueno

- Festival Card #101

Mainline is a track featured in MotorStorm: Apocalypse. The track itself consists of subway tunnels, drainage tunnels, a concrete canal, the city's central train station, a fissure created by the earthquake, an underground parking lot and a segment of collapsed highway (while the above-ground route is always available, the highway itself only collapses in the Festival Race). Trains will speed past in flames or may even fly off the rails and crash onto the track.

Destruction and Hazards[]

Off the Rails[]

Crazies will attack the player during the race.

  • Lap 1
    • A flaming train can seen speeding across the bridge above the entrance to the canal.
    • The bridge that marks the lap line can collapse just before second lap.
      • If this does not occur on the first lap, it will instead occur at the end of Lap 2 before the race is over.
  • Lap 2
    • A tremor opens holes in the upper left wall of the first tunnel. Near the end of the tunnel, the left wall is destroyed entirely, opening a new path.
    • In the canyon, a rock wall parallel to the track collapses, opening a new path and creating a makeshift ramp on the pre-existing right-hand side.
    • In the larger half of the canyon before the second tunnel, there is a landslide that brings down the ruined factories and warehouses, crushing all AI ahead of the player and rerouting all the racers to the more elevated part.
      • This also takes with it the collapsed train track just before the second tunnel's entrance.
    • A burning train flies off from atop the second tunnel's entrance and flies off into the canyon, leaving behind a train carriage that creates a barrier blocking the edge of the cliff.
    • In the second tunnel just before the parking garage, the ceiling of a blocked-off tunnel collapses to open a new path that allows racers to briefly access the surface as an alternative to staying in the tunnel.
    • Falling debris blocks the third fork before the station area.

End of the Line[]

DuskLite and Crazies are present throughout the race.

  • Lap 1
    • A train speeds off one of the elevated tracks and crashes into the right half of the outdoor station.
      • As this happens, a group of DuskLite jets can be seen flying overhead.
    • The highway bridge at the surface fork collapses.(Festival mode only)
    • At the canyon jump, a DuskLite jet shoots at the trains, causing them to explode and fall into the canyon below.
    • In the last tunnel after the canyon jump, the support beams on the right start to crumble.
    • By the time the player exits the tunnels, DuskLite have completely invaded the area, with large amounts of helicopters able to be seen for the entirety of the second lap.
    • Just before the second lap, a truck bursts through the MotorStorm sign atop the bridge that marks the lap line.
  • Lap 2
    • During the second lap while the player is in the train tunnels, tremors occur causing lights to fail, dust to fall and supports to crumble.
  • Lap 3
    • At the outdoor station area, a DuskLite jet shoots at the overhead archways on the right-hand side, causing them to collapse.(Festival mode only)
    • In the tunnel after leaving the station area, the far right fork of the junction becomes blocked after that part of the roof collapses, bringing down rubble and a DuskLite tank.(Festival mode only; The look at function was still there even outside of festival where it already collapsed before starting race)

Trivia[]

  • The track "Off the Rails" is featured in the game's single-player and multiplayer demos.
    • This race in the demo is similar to the one in Festival mode.
    • The bridge that collapses in "Off the Rails" is also seen at the end of the game's intro cinematic.
  • The term "Mainline" refers to a railroad's main track that runs throughout their network of rails. The opposite of a mainline is a 'branch line' which goes off in one direction and is a dead end, or connects to nothing.
  • On portions of the track that feature railway tunnels and storm drains, it is possible to drive along the inside wall and ceiling. It is also possible to overtake larger classes such as the Big Rigs by utilizing this method. It is easiest to pull this off while driving classes such as superminis and buggies, but is impossible to do on ATVs, bikes, superbikes, and choppers because the game physics do not allow these classes to go upside down without wrecking. This is also required to get a Festival Card positioned on the ceiling of the tunnel.
  • The location of this track is based around the Bayshore district, in San Francisco.
